In 1910, Colonel Charles Wilfred Harris in the Arizona National Guard, serving as a captain of a rifle unit, found his team in Camp Perry’s rifle competition as the only team without a representing emblem. Harris, working with W.R. Stewart of Mesa, sewn by Stewart’s wife, Mae, created the amazing Arizona state flag from a simple sketch on the back of an envelope.

The state of Arizona was admitted to the union on February 14th, 1912.
Colonel Harris’s design became the official state flag in 1917.
The top half of the Arizona state flag displays vivid red and yellow. The colors alternating both represent the original color of America’s original thirteen colonies and the rays of a setting sun, as Arizona is a western state. The red and yellow rays of this sun also refer to the Spanish flags carried by Coronado when he came to Arizona in 1540.
The bottom half, a deep solid blue is the very same blue used in the United States flag. All parts of this flag are tied together with a perfect copper star which symbolizes Arizona’s wealth of copper and its production.
The Arizona state flag in 2001 was once identified as one of the ten best flags of the continent, ranking sixth out of seventy-two flags judged.
