Around 1912, it was discovered that Arkansas did not have their own state flag. Pine Bluff Chapter of the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) wished to present to the USS Arkansas battleship a state flag but it was discovered that one had not yet been created. The DAR sponsored a contest to design the Arkansas state flag, and Willie Hocker, a member of the Pine Bluff Chapter, won that design. The original creation featured three blue stars in the middle of a white diamond, without the state’s name of Arkansas in the middle. Secretary of State, Earle Hodges, a member of the flag committee, requested the addition of ARKANSAS to the newly designed flag and rearranged the stars to what you see today.
The Arkansas state flag was adopted officially on February 26, 1913. In 1923, the legislature added the fourth star to represent the Confederate States of America alongside Spain, France, and the United States. The 1924 flag arrangement was officially recognized and became law on 1987.
