Louisiana State Flag

The first unofficial use of a pelican for a flag was noted in roughly 1861. The Drapaue de la Luisiane, (or: the flag of Louisiana) was first adopted in 1912 and further modified with more detail and color in 2010.

On a field of azure blue, symbolizing truth and hope, the Louisiana state flag depicts a ‘pelican in her piety. A white pelican nurturing her 3 young by tearing at her own breast. Three drops of blood are drawn upon the bird’s chest. This symbol dates to the medieval era, as the pelican was thought to be particularly attentive to her young, to the point of wounding her own breast to feed her chicks when no other food was available. The pelican became a symbol of religious significance and for Louisiana. It is a symbol widely regarded as caring and self-sacrificing and that Louisiana is as equally devoted to her children.

The shape of the pelican with wings spread form a stylized fleur-de-lis, a significant emblem often depicted in Louisiana as well. A white banner with blue lettering rests below the pelican and her young in the nest and reads: “Union, Justice, Confidence.”
