November 16th, 1907 was the year when Oklahoma became the 46th state admitted to the Union. Oklahoma's first flag was adopted in 1911, four years after it became a state. The first flag took the colors red, white and blue from the flag of the United States and a large centered white star outlined in blue on a red field. The number 46 was written in blue inside the star representing Oklahoma becoming the 46th state.

A contest in 1942, run by the Daughters of the American Revolution, was held to replace and redesign the flag, as at that time, red flags were closely associated with communism. The winning entry was by Louise Fluke, which was adopted as the state flag on April 2nd, 1925. The word Oklahoma was not added until 1941. The official design has not changed since the addition of the state's name in 1941.
The Oklahoma state flag features an Osage shield. The Osage shield shows two symbols of peace, the Plains-style ceremonial pipe which represents Indigenous Americans and the olive branch, which represents the European Americans. Six golden brown crosses, Indigenous American symbols for stars are spaced on the shield. The blue flag is inspired by the Choctaw flag adopted by the tribe in 1860 and carried through the American Civil War. The blue field also is representative of devotion. The shield represents defensive or protective warfare, showing the love of a united people.
