This first evidence of the Bonnie Blue flag was noted in 1810, used to represent the Republic of West Florida. At the time, it was a republic of English-speaking inhabitants living within parts of Louisiana, east of the Mississippi River who rebelled against the reign of the Spanish government and overthrew Spain's Governor. Though the republic's independence at the time barely lasted three months, dissolved after the annexation of Louisiana's portion of disputed land, the tenacity and courageousness of this group live on in this historic, accurate recreation of the flag flown at that time.

It's later referred to as the Burnet Flag, adopted by the Congress of the Republic of Texas on December 10th, 1836.
The flag, a dark blue banner with a brilliant white star in the middle was changed to a gold star in the middle after the Texas adoption. This flag and it's variations of white or gold stars were popularized in 1861 by writing the popular song, "The Bonnie Blue Flag," turning the flag into a symbol of independence.
The Bonnie Blue flag was also used unofficially above Confederate areas in Fort Sumter, where the Civil War began. This flag has come to symbolize secession, self-governance and State Sovereignty.
