Emulating the Great Seal of the United States, the Illinois state flag depicts a bald eagle perched upon a stone carrying a shield within its talons. Clutched within the bald eagle’s beak is the state’s motto in a twisting red banner lined with white reading: State Sovereignty, National Union. There are 13 stars and 13 stripes on the shield in Illinois state flag for the original 13 states of the Union.
On the rock the eagle perches upon, the dates 1868 and 1818 are printed, celebrating the date Illinois was admitted to the union (1818) and the date the state seal was officially adopted (1868.)
Beneath the rock on the Illinois state flag grass and greenery is shown to stand for Illinois rich soil as well as being a prairie state. The blazing sun is seen rising over an expanse of water.
Illinois state flags recall so many of the state’s wonderful vistas. Busy, bustling Chicago, home to world-class museums, Cloud Gate sculpture and Millennium Park. There’s also the legendary pizza and historic birthplace of an unforgettable President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln.
