Massachusetts State Flag

A variant of the flag we see today of a white flag with a blue seal was carried by Massachusetts volunteer regiments during the Civil War alongside the National colors. The Irish regiment carried an alternative to this showcasing a harp symbol.

The Massachusetts state flag displays the state’s coat of arms on both sides. On a field of white, a blue shield rests in the center. At the top of the shield is the state’s military crest: a bent arm holding a broadsword aloft, blade side up to remind that it was through the American Revolution that liberty was won. It symbolizes the idea that one should lose an arm rather than live under tyranny.

In the center of the blue shield stands an Algonquin indigenous North American with bow and arrow, with the arrow pointed downward signifying peace. On the left of the blue shield is a single white star with five points that represents Massachusetts’ admission as the 6th state. At the bottom of the shield is a blue ribbon which reads: “Ense Petit Placidam, Sub Libertate Quietem,” or “By the Sword We Seek Peace, But Peace Only Under Liberty,” the state’s motto.
