Whether this event is true or false, we do know the first Hawaii state flag resembled the British Naval Flag. There is some dispute as to whom designed the flag for Kamehameha I with Alexander Adams or George Charles Beckley being credited. The first flag was also very similar to the British East India Company flag used in this time. This flag was used in a Hawaiian trade mission between to China by Captain Adams in 1817.
Today, the current Hawaii state flag is exactly as the official flag introduced in 1845. Hawaii’s flag shows the Union Jack, or Union flag, national flag of the United Kingdom. The Union Jack is placed in the upper left-hand side honoring the friendship with the British. There are eight horizontal stripes that stretch across this entire flag of white, red and blue. The eight stripes stand for the eight major islands, Hawaii, Maui, Kaho’olawe, Lānaʻi, Moloka'i, O’ahu, and Ni’ihau.
