Connecticut State Flags

In 1644 the Connecticut Colony purchased Saybrook and the seal’s design was transferred along with the purchase. It wasn’t until October 25th, 1711 that the governor and legislature decided to change the seal’s appearance. The grapevines were reduced from fifteen to three to symbolize the three oldest settlements in the state of Connecticut: Windsor, Harford, and Wethersfield. The positioning of the state motto was also slightly changed.

Connecticut was the 5th state to become admitted to the union on January 9th, 1788. It was in 1897 that the altered version of the Connecticut state flag was approved by the General Assembly and the flag has remained unchanged since that date.

This flag features a field of rich blue with a white shield decorated in bright gold. Connecticut’s state flags show three healthy grape vines in purple, brown, and green growing within the shield, each sporting three bunches of ripened grapes. Clusters of green oak leaves with acorns surround the shield and a white streamer bordered in gold displays the state’s motto.

The grapes in the Connecticut state flag represent good luck and joy while the vines themselves stand for strong and lasting friendships. Both the oak leaves as well as the acorns are symbolism for faith, endurance, age, and strength.
