Kentucky State Flag

Kentucky did not have an officially adopted state flag, however, until 1918. Designed by Jesse Cox Burgess, an art teacher in Frankfort, Kentucky’s state capitol. Kentucky’s General Assembly adopted Jesse’s design of the Commonwealth’s seal on a navy-blue field, though the General Assembly could not agree on a final specification of the Kentucky state flag until 1928, where it was given the final approval.

Kentucky’s flag incorporates the Seal of Commonwealth by a wreath of lush goldenrod along the bottom. On the inside of the seal, an image depicts a pioneer man and a statesman embracing, representing all frontiersmen and statesmen. The embrace symbolizes the meaning of Kentucky’s motto, “United we stand, divided we fall,” which is printed inside the seal around the two men. The words: “Commonwealth of Kentucky,” curve along the top of the very same seal.

Kentucky is known as the “Bluegrass State,” based on the lush bluegrass found in so many of its beautiful pastures. Kentucky boasts one of the world’s longest cave system, the Mammoth Cave National Park, abundant resources and two of the largest man-made lakes east of the Mississippi River.
