Nebraska State Flag

Nebraska’s state seal was originally designed in 1867; but the current design of the flag as we know it, with the state seal displayed, wasn’t adopted until 1963 making it one of the last states to adopt a state flag.

Within the gold and silver seal of the Nebraska state flag, the mountains and the Missouri river are silver, the other features of the seal, including the text, “Great Seal of the State of Nebraska,” and the date, March 1st, 1867 are in gold. The state’s motto, “Equality before the law,” appears on a gold banner within the seal. It also features a steamboat, the mechanic parts represented by a smith hammer and anvil, with sheaves of wheat, and finally stalks of corn to represent the importance of Nebraska’s agriculture. In the background toward the silver mountains, a train heading toward them.
