The seal is featured on a blue field. The first official state flag of Minnesota was flown from 1893 until 1957 and was redesigned to become easier to manufacture with a more simplistic state seal. The current flag of Minnesota was adopted in 1957, while the state seal was modified in 1983.
The Minnesota seal on the field of blue shows an Indigenous American riding a horse in the background, while a farmer plows a field. The farmer’s ax, gun, and powder horn rest on a stump nearby. The field and plow represent the importance of agriculture, while the tools represent labor and hunting. The stump reflects how important lumber was in the state. A river and waterfall are for the Mississippi River and St. Anthony falls while the pine trees stand for the pine regions of St. Croix and Lake Superior.
