New Jersey’s flag features the state’s seal as the central motif. The coat of arms contains a horse’s head; beneath the head is a helmet, showing that New Jersey governs itself, and it has three plows on a shield to highlight the state’s long agricultural history. New Jersey has been nicknamed the “Garden State.” Two goddesses stand on opposite sides of a blue shield with the three plows depicted. The two goddesses stand for Liberty and Prosperity. Liberty is on the left, holding a staff with a liberty cap, and the goddess on the right is Ceres, goddess of agriculture.
The New Jersey General Assembly, on May 11th, 1896, officially approved the state emblem, and the buff color due indirectly to George Washington, who had ordered on September 14th, 1778, that the uniforms of the New Jersey Continental Line be dark (Jersey) blue, with buff facings.
