West Virginia's current state flag design was adopted in 1977 and has remained the same since. The flag is a pure white field bordered on four sides with a strip of blue. The white field is a symbol of purity, the blue represents the Union. The state's coat of arms rests in the middle, a stylized version of the Great Seal of West Virginia. Two tethered bunches of the state flower wreath the lower half of the seal. The motto: Montani Semper Liberi, translated into English reads: "Mountaineers are always free," rests in a banner of red.
