In 1920, it was the Daughters of the American Revolution that pushed New Mexico to consider and design a contemporary and unique flag. A contest to design the New Mexico state flag was then won by Harry Mera of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Mera was an archaeologist who was familiar with the symbol used on the flag of New Mexico. The symbol in red on a field of bright yellow, is the Zia Sun symbol found at Zia Pueblo on a 19th-century pot. This symbol has sacred meaning to the Zia, as four is a sacred number. Four symbolizes the Circle of Life, the four directions, the four times of day, the four stages of life and the four seasons. Joining these four is a circle, which binds all these elements together. His design is still used to this very day.
New Mexico is a stunning place to be, live and come from. With an equally stunning flag that comes with two hardy brass grommets, you can hang your New Mexico State flag easily. Our 4” x 6” flags come mounted to a hardy 10” staff with a spear top.
Our indoor, or parade version of the New Mexico state flag features a pole sleeve and vibrant gold fringe around the edges. More than just flags, we have highly mobile versions of your state’s flag in durable vinyl decals for both indoor and outdoor use and elaborately detailed embroidered iron-on-patches.
For the best quality in indoor flag use and affordability, we recommend our polyester flags. For the heavy-duty, weather-resistant and toughest outdoor flag display, our nylon and polyester 2 may be just what you are looking for. Our polyester 2 flags have been rigorously tested to withstand extreme, high winds.
Let the sacred four and the circle that joins us all fly free with our beautiful New Mexico state flags!
