New Mexico State Flag

In 1920, it was the Daughters of the American Revolution that pushed New Mexico to consider and design a contemporary and unique flag. A contest to design the New Mexico state flag was then won by Harry Mera of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Mera was an archaeologist who was familiar with the symbol used on the flag of New Mexico. The symbol in red on a field of bright yellow, is the Zia Sun symbol found at Zia Pueblo on a 19th-century pot. This symbol has sacred meaning to the Zia, as four is a sacred number. Four symbolizes the Circle of Life, the four directions, the four times of day, the four stages of life and the four seasons. Joining these four is a circle, which binds all these elements together. His design is still used to this very day.
