Delaware’s motto, “Liberty and Independence” approved in 1847, was written in a hanging banner at the farmer and soldier’s feet. The date, December 7, 1789, was later added to the Delaware state flag to commemorate that Delaware became the 1st state to ratify the United States Constitution.
The Delaware state flag was officially adopted on July 2nd, 1913.
The blue and light yellow—also called colonial blue and buff, represents the colors of the uniform worn by General George Washington. The Delaware state flag symbols represent many aspects of Delaware. The ship at the top of Delaware’s coat of arms reflected the state’s successful shipbuilding industry and trade. The farmer as well as a soldier stood for the importance of Delaware’s farming in addition to the keeping of America’s liberties by the soldier. Wheat, corn and water reflect Delaware’s farming roots as well as the Delaware River being an important part of trading. The ox was a reflection on the importance of farming animals to Delaware’s economy.
