American history is rich in the ways in which our ancestors chose to symbolize important places and events, many involving the political stances taken during 18th and 19th centuries. After all, a nation was being born! The concept of a flag has been, and still is, a crucial indicator in times of tension. A party's specific origin was often indicated from the flags flying from their ships far before they walked ashore. Even today, we still use flags to represent important factors—country, academia, religion, and so many other facets of every day life are communicated in flags. Our historical flags collected features some very unique and uncommonly seen options, as well as selections that have become popularized.
Some of our options in our historical American flags collection are our flag sets. We offer three unique sets that each have a specific theme. One set features the six flags of Texas of which the French Fleur De Lis, Spanish Lions & Castles, Mexico, Texas, Stars & Bars, and the U.S. flag are included. Each flag measures 4"x6" and includes a display base. The same set-up is featured in our Flags of the Confederacy set, which includes the Stars & Bars, Stainless Banner, Third National, Naval Jack, and the Battle flag selections. For the Flags of our Country, ten flags are seated into a wooden base that reads "Flags of our Country" in gold. This special set includes the following flags: St. George Cross, Kings Colors, British Red Ensign, Continental, Gadsden, Grand Union, Betsy Ross, Bennington, Star Spangled Banner, and the 50-Star US flag. Each set may be purchased as a collection with side grommets for wall display.
This collection has a number of pre-colonial and colonial flags that are perfect as gifts for history buffs. The Columbus Expedition flag bears the letters "F" and "Y" in green fixed onto a white background, with two gold crowns atop each letter. It is believed that this was the first true flag flown in the Americas. The Lions & Castles flag was how Columbus laid claim in Spain. This historical flag showcases the then newly united royal houses, Aragon and Castile. Once colonialism was in full swing, flags began to fly by the likes of icons like George Washington. We have a few options that pay homage to his flags, like the Washington Commander in Chief and Washington's Cruisers flags.
As the nation developed further, so did the American flag. Old Glory went through a number of changes—27, in fact. We offer each of these, all of which can be legally flown at any time. These flags are fantastic conversation starters. We also offer Betsy Ross' famous flag in a number of different sizes and fabrics. For vintage enthusiasts, we've taken the Ross flag as well as the 50 Star American flag and tea dyed them for an antiqued, rich appearance!
