Indiana State Flag

The official flag for the Indiana state was designed by Paul Hadley and officially adopted by the state on May 11th, 1917. It was created to commemorate the state’s 1916 centennial anniversary and the Indiana General Assembly created a contest and resolution to adopt a state flag. The General Assembly only added one thing to Paul Hadley’s original design: the word, Indiana in a crescent shape.

Indiana’s state flag displays a deep golden torch, standing for liberty and enlightenment. The rays of the torch represent how far-reaching the influence of both liberty and enlightenment can reach. 19 beautiful stars dot the torch evenly spaced, for Indiana was the 19th state to become part of the Union. The stars are placed in such a way as to have an outer ring of 13 stars—for the original 13 colonies—an inner semi-circle of 5 stars for the next 5 states that joined after and the 19th start the largest, crowning the flames of the torch.
