From 1925 until 1927, Kansas used a state banner instead of a flag and that banner was a large sunflower and the word, Kansas, on a deep blue field. It was originally intended to be hung from a horizontal bar rather than a vertical flagpole and given unique design so as to avoid competition with the United States Flag. The banner, however, was rejected for display by Washington, D.C. as its method of hanging was considered awkward. The 1925 design by Hazel Avery became officially adopted by the Kansas State Legislature in 1927 and only modified to include the state’s name Kansas, in 1961.
The original banner featuring the original lone sunflower on a blue field is still considered an official alternative to the state flag. The Kansas state flags you see today still have a rich, almost royal blue field with the seal placed in the middle. Some variants of the Kansas flag may have four white stars in the four corners. Most Kansas flags come without the stars, however.
The Kansas seal in the middle of the flag depicts many symbols that represent Kansas: the sunflower, the state’s official flower resting on a twisted blue and gold bar that represents the Louisiana Purchase. There is a beautiful rising sun, representing the east; a river and steamboat, symbols of commerce, a cabin and a settler with plow horses to represent the wealth of agriculture.
Also noted in the Kansas state flags of today in the distance of the seal, oxen draw a wagon train west, a herd of buffalo with two indigenous people. The buffalo became one of Kansas’ states official animal in 1955, as herds of millions of them once roamed Kansas.
In the sky of the Kansas state flag are 34 stars, standing for Kansas being the 34th state admitted to the union and the state motto above: “As astra per aspera.” (“To the stars through difficulties.”).
