The act to establish an official Maine state flag was established in 1901, but no action was taken on that bill until 1909. The original design for Maine’s flag consisted of a green pine tree in the center with a blue north star and a buff colors background. Maine also is one of only two states with a separate ensign (National flag flown in a vessel to indicate citizenry,) which is rarely seen. This ensign features the green pine tree as well but has no blue star, and the pine tree is on a white field with a seaman’s anchor resting on the trunk. The words, “Maine,” and “Dirigo,” are printed on the top and bottom of the tree.
Even the colors used for the flag can be slightly different according to whom creates the flag, but there is one thing consistent in all of Maine’s state flags: the blue field on which the Maine Arms is placed upon is always the same blue as the flag of the United States.
The law that established Maine’s state flag was enacted on February 23rd, 1909 and modeled after flags used in the American Civil War.
The flag’s blue field features the state coat of arms in the center. The shield containing the coat of arms contains a pine tree with a moose—that state’s official animal-- resting under it while beside the edge of the sea. A farmer on the left and a seaman to the right represents Maine’s traditional reliance on agriculture and the sea. The state’s motto, “Dirigo,” or “I lead,” is written on a red ribbon on the north star at the top, and “Maine,” on a blue ribbon below.
You can bring that home with you, wherever you are, with one of our magnificent Maine state flags. Able to withstand salty sea air, humidity, and strong winds—or just the outdoors in general—our polyester 2 and nylon flags will make a wonderful addition to any outdoor vista or front yard. Both fabrics have been vigorously tested for outdoor use, and nylon’s glossiness brings an extra bit of vibrancy to any flag.
