Mississippi State Flags

Mississippi’s first flags were two. One, which was called the Bonnie Blue Flag, featuring a royal blue field with a single white star. The other, called the Magnolia flag, was a Magnolia tree in the center, with a small blue field in the upper left-hand corner with a white star in the middle. The Magnolia flag was used unofficially as the Mississippi state flag until 1894, when the current version of the flag was first adopted.

On February 7th, 1894 Legislature voted to replace the Magnolia flag. Today, the Mississippi state flag is the only United States flag to include the Confederate battle flag’s saltire. Today’s flag features a square Union canton in the upper left and three horizontal bards of blue, white and red, the same shades are used as the national colors of the United States, with the 13 stars representing the original 13 colonies.
