Originally Nevada became famous for the 1859 discovery of the Comstock Lode, the richest known U.S. silver deposit. It is also one of the largest gold-producing states in the nation. Mining, manufacturing, and aerospace are big fields in Nevada as well. Nevada also boasts some of the darkest skies in the US today, and one of its cities, Tonopah, was voted the #1 spot for the most amazing stargazing.
Back in 1905, the first flag of Nevada was created by Governor John Sparks and Col. Harry Day. The design was based strongly on Nevada’s natural resources of gold and silver. Nevada’s current design was a result of a design contest in 1926 and was won by Louis Shellback III, subject to some revision by state Legislature. Today’s Nevada state flag features the state seal in the upper left-hand corner in a field of cobalt blue. A five-pointed silver star is between two sprays of yellow flowering sagebrush, the state’s flower, and a golden scroll with the words: “Battle born,” and the state’s name “Nevada,” beneath the star.
