Today, North Dakota's state flag is nearly an exact copy of the unit banner carried by the state's troop in the Philippine-American War. It was adopted officially by the North Dakota Legislative Assembly on March 3rd, 1911, although the color of the flag was not legally specified at that time. The final design and color of the North Dakota state flag was cemented by Legislation in 1943, bringing it back to the original troop banner which is on display at the North Dakota Heritage Center in Bismark.
This beautifully historic flag features a bald eagle clasping an olive branch in one talon, and a bundle of arrows in another. The eagle carries a red ribbon bordered in gold within its beak that reads: "E Pluribus Unum," which is Latin for, "Out of many, one." The Latin phrase symbolizes one nation made of many states. A gold-lined shield with thirteen stripes rests on the eagle's breast, representing the original thirteen states. Thirteen stars above the eagle in gold represent the birth of a new nation, the United States. The name, "North Dakota," appeared below the eagle's talons on a red ribbon outlined in gold. Endless plains mean endless skies and night times sprinkled with millions of stars. Show your love for the prairies of North Dakota with an utterly gorgeous flag from us.
